Lent at St. Nicholas Parish
A shared journey with St. Mary Parish

Lenten Theme: "As the world changes, the Cross stands firm." -St. Bruno of Cologne

How to keep Lent in our lives

It is time to focus our attention on living our Baptism and being the Body of Christ. In our busyness we can lose the relationship God wants to have with us individually and as members of community. Lent is our penitential time to turn towards God and one another in the way our Baptism calls us.

As we gather through Lent together with St. Mary Parish, it is worth noting where our parishes are located.

St. Nicholas Parish is located at 806 Ridge Avenue, Evanston, IL 60202.

St. Mary Parish is located at 1012 Lake Street, Evanston, IL 60201.

FOLLOW THE LENTEN REGULATIONS
  • Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States.
  • The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity.
  • All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season.

JOIN A RELENT COMMUNITY!
ReLent Groups gather virtually for about an hour or so to “unpack” the Sunday Scripture readings more specifically. What is the challenge for us, here and now and how can we help each other in living the Word? In the course of that we get to know each other better and strengthen our bonds as Church.

Almsgiving with Solidarity Bridge

For patients in Bolivia and Paraguay, untreated health issues can significantly limit their ability to work, care for their families, and pursue their dreams. Your solidarity and almsgiving this Lent can help someone access life-changing surgery and renewed health.

By joining together as a community of solidarity, we pray that all of us might experience God’s healing and transformation throughout this Lenten season.
Pray with us and give alms at  www.SolidarityBridge.org/Lent

PRAYER FOR LENT 2022

 God of all people,
Your compassion invites us to be transformed,
Your love calls us to be one human family,
Your wisdom invites us to journey through this season with open hearts.

Let us Pray for our brothers and sisters, near and far, drawing us closer to those in need of your healing touch.
Let us Fast from that which cannot nourish our deepest longings, a fasting that gives life to us and others.
Let us Give generously of ourselves, sharing your abundant gifts with those in need.

May the journey of Lent be a time of renewal and growth
so that with changed hearts, we might heal and transform your world.
Amen.

“Praise be to you, my Lord, through our Sister, Mother Earth, who sustains and governs us, and who produces various fruit with coloured flowers and herbs” In the words of this beautiful canticle, Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us that our common home is like a sister with whom we share our life and a beautiful mother who opens her arms to embrace us.  -- From the encyclical "Laudato Sí"
